Scientific Bias

Meaning ❉ Scientific bias, within the tender landscape of textured hair understanding, denotes the subtle, often unconscious leanings embedded within scientific inquiry that can gently tilt observations or conclusions. Historically, much hair science has disproportionately focused on hair structures differing from our beautiful coily and kinky patterns, overlooking the distinct structural nuances and physiological behaviors inherent to Black and mixed-race hair. Such historical focus has, perhaps unintentionally, shaped product formulation, often without full consideration for the specific needs of highly textured strands. Acknowledging these historical imbalances permits a more discerning search for knowledge, truly attuned to the heritage of our hair, aiding in the growth of accurate insights. When systematizing a care routine, recognizing where past studies may have fallen short allows for the automation-like principles to be built upon reliable, relevant data. Practical application then involves a gentle questioning of broad assumptions, steering towards accurate, culturally informed data for genuine hair vitality and sustained health.
