Cultural Biology, for our coils and curls, considers the gentle interaction between our hair’s unique biological makeup and the long-standing cultural practices, community wisdom, and societal understandings that have shaped its care. This perspective offers insight into how ancestral methods, carried through time, shaped our earliest understandings of growth patterns, density, and inherent hair qualities for Black and mixed-race hair. It examines how these inherited customs, often subtle, have evolved into daily routines, guiding the consistent care of textured hair.
